Police say 76-year-old Kathleen Schuman, of West Babylon, shot her neighbor in the face with a flare gun.
They say it happened Monday at Belmont Vistas 55, an older community where Schuman and the victim live.
Neighbors say the two were fighting.
Police have not said what led up to Schuman allegedly firing the flare gun. In court, she denied the accusations.
The victim was taken to the hospital, and police say the flare caused substantial pain and physical injury.
The judge sent bail for Schuman at $5,000 cash and ordered her to stay away from the victim.
A spokesperson for Conifer LLC., a real estate and property management company that oversees Belmont Vistas told News 12 in a statement:
"We are aware of an altercation that occurred yesterday evening between two residents of the Belmont Villas community. This was an isolated incident between individuals and unrelated to the community itself. We are cooperating fully with law enforcement as they handle the matter. The safety and well-being of our residents remain our top priority." Police charged Schuman with second-degree assault.
