A Lynbrook mother accused of leaving her child, 6, alone to wander the boardwalk in Long Beach pleaded not guilty in city court yesterday afternoon, according to court records.
She is charged with endangering the welfare of a child.
Long Beach police said they responded to the boardwalk near Laurelton Boulevard just before noon yesterday in response to reports of a child left unattended.
"People in Long Beach are pretty good about being observant and helping each other out if they see a problem, you know, kind of tackle it if there's some situation like that, like a lost child or abandoned child, they would call the police," Long Beach resident Cathy Kellar said.
Officials said they found the kid and then arrested the mother, Nousaiba Sifaddine, 34.
Investigators said the mother told them she had "gone for an extended walk," but did not say how long the kid was left alone.
"It's a little young for that," a man walking the boardwalk said this morning. "That's kind of scary. Not everyone's perfect. People do make mistakes."
"I couldn't even fathom that at six," Long Beach resident Lori Gillen said.
The 6-year-old child was released to the care of a relative, according to officials.
Sifaddine is scheduled to return to court next Wednesday, July 16, at 10:15 a.m., according to court records.
New 12 reached out to her attorney, Mitchell Barnett, who has not yet responded to our request for comment.
