A few months after her 26-year-old daughter was shot and killed, Alverna Sharpless got a call she never expected - from the man accused of pulling the trigger.

Prosecutors say Quincy Davis shot Imani Sharpless and her boyfriend after an argument over a Home Depot parking spot.

Since then, Sharpless and Davis, who was 58 at the time of the shooting, have been speaking regularly by phone.

“We pray,” said Sharpless. “We do a lot of praying because I don't want to just keep reliving what actually happened. And he tells me all the time that he did not mean to do it.”

In court on Friday, a judge said they’ll have to wait until fall just to set a trial date, a delay that left both Sharpless and Davis frustrated.

Davis, who walked into the courtroom with a cane, told the judge the long wait is taking a toll on his health.

For now, all they can do is wait, and find peace in the most unlikely places.

“I could not allow him to kill my daughter and to kill me too,” she said. “So, I can't let anger and animosity and resentment stop me from being the best version of myself.”
