FDNY first responders were at Coney Island rushing into the surf in less than a minute on Thursday.
While it was all a drill, there were real stakes in mind. Ladder 161 is one of several teams trained to rescue swimmers using surfboards, ropes or buoys.
Officials say many real emergencies stem from swimmers diving off the pier—despite warning signs—and urge beachgoers to stay close to lifeguards and know their limits.
“If it looks rough, that might not be the day to go out too far,” said FDNY Lt. Kevin Sheehan. “Only go as far as you’re comfortable.”
The department trains in all conditions, so they stay ready to help.
