A Queens man is facing charges after police say he hit and killed someone crossing the street in East Flatbush Thursday afternoon.
It happened just after 1:15 p.m. at the corner of Church Avenue and East 55th Street.
Police say the driver—identified as 58-year-old Winston Reid—was behind the wheel of a white 2011 Ford E350 van, heading east on Church Avenue, when he hit a man walking across the intersection from the southwest to the northwest corner.
That man was taken to Brookdale Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. He still hasn’t been publicly identified, but neighbors say he was a familiar face in the area and used a cane to get around.
“It’s horrendous—anybody who gets injured,” said neighbor Basil Henry.
“I don’t know if the guy was drunk or whatever but clearly because he’s revving past—it’s not like driving slow and he sped up. No—it’s boom,” said another neighbor, Zachari Jonez.
Police say Reid stayed at the scene and was arrested later that afternoon. He’s now charged with vehicular manslaughter, driving while intoxicated and driving while ability impaired.
Vision Zero data shows this same intersection has seen seven traffic-related injuries in just the last two years—three so far in 2024, and four in 2023.
The investigation is still ongoing.
